TitleThe Digital Iron Curtain
BriefNovember 17 1989 was the start of the Velvet Revolution and the fall of the Iron Curtain. But half of Slovaks don't know this. Mobile service provider O2 decided to use its power to change that situation. On November 17 2016 it stopped people accessing overseas sites, sending them instead to a digital iron curtain. Meanwhile, users who had just crossed the physical border were sent an SMS reminding them that their journey would not have been so easy in the past. Has the younger generation forgotten the value of freedom? What do they know about the iron curtain? To remind the entire country of the significance of November 17th, O2 created a one-day digital iron curtain. Each time a user tried to access a website outside of the country, a pop up appeared giving them the option to “continue freely” or learn more about November 17th. We can’t forget the value of freedom, lest we face a real iron curtain again.
