Miron Alexander Bilski Interview(s)

POV: Director

How would you describe what you do?
I would describe myself as an award-winning director with an eye for comedy who combines humor and CGI and who finds his strength in a cinematic style of storytelling.
How did you get into this job?
When I was 15 I started to take photographs that I developed myself. After that I loved writing short stories and went on filming them.
What is most challenging about what you do?
Finding the humor in a story and to create stopping power.
What is most rewarding?
When a story works, people smile and it creates stopping power
What’s a typical work week like?
Usually at the beginning of the week I receive pitches from around the world. I check the planning and choose which scripts appeal the most, are a brilliant laugh or have that something je ne sais quoi. Then if the planning fits and the scripts is good I write a treatment. This proces including researching takes 2-3 days. Together with my team we find pictures, make storyboards and mood boards for the deck. Depending on which stage of production I am in I usually spend a day or two in the editing suite or the sound studio. I tend to keep the weekend free to spend time with my son Jonathan who is 10 yrs old.
What needs to happen the most in order for a shoot to run smoothly?
Preparation, preparation, preparation. The better the preparation the better the shoot. There will always be unexpected things happening on a shoot and I love the unpredictability of it because it tickles your creativity but the better the preparation the more freedom you have.
Whats your best job/worst job?
My best job will be my next one. I really don't have a worst job, I'm an optimist.
What advice would you offer someone considering a career as a Director?
Write a lot, keep an open mind and look around you. And enjoy what you do.
If you had one project that you could post on AdForum to represent your work, what would it be?
It would be my work for AXA Global: vimeo.com
Finally tell us something that most people don’t know about being a Director?
After being a director for over 15 years you start to rely on intuition and most of time you are right. Most of the time - so beware.
