Story | Would you watch football if injured players were killed? So why support horse racing? An average of 150 horses die as a result of racing in the UK every year. Broken necks, backs and legs are commonplace on British racing tracks, where horses are whipped to make them run faster and jump over dangerous obstacles. The pressure inflicted on their bodies during the race can lead to painful gastric ulcers and bleeding lungs. 89 horses have been killed on Cheltenham Racecourse since 2008 – ten of these in 2018 with seven horses destroyed in 2018’s Cheltenham Festival. |
