PHNX Jury Interview 2024

Why did you think it was important to join the PHNX jury this year?
I believe that with over two decades of experience in the audiovisual industry, I've developed a keen eye for the nuances of motion graphics and visual effects that elevate advertising to an art form. My role in breathing life into countless projects, from TV commercials to short films, has honed my critical and detailed perspective—a lens through which I examine and appreciate innovative creations. Joining the PHNX jury isn't just an opportunity; it's a platform where I can contribute meaningfully to the celebration and critique of global creativity in advertising. The festival's commitment to fresh perspectives resonates with my passion for pushing boundaries and embracing new ideas. I'm excited to dive into this experience, share my insights, and learn from fellow creatives from around the world.
What do you think of our hybrid jury, featuring creatives but also strategists, clients and people from all corners of the industry?
I find the hybrid composition of the jury truly invigorating. It's an innovative approach that enriches the evaluation process by incorporating diverse perspectives—from creative visionaries to strategic thinkers and even the clients themselves. This variety not only broadens our understanding but ensures that our assessments resonate with a global and varied audience. Such a dynamic setup facilitates a more comprehensive dialogue around what truly makes advertising effective and memorable.
What do you think of the idea of free entry until the shortlist stage?
I think it’s a brilliant idea. Offering free entry until the shortlist stage lowers the barriers for participation, inviting a broader spectrum of talent to step into the spotlight. This approach is especially encouraging for those brilliant creators who might hesitate due to impostor syndrome—it gives them a nudge to overcome self-doubt by passing through an initial validation phase. Once they see their work on the shortlist, it can boost their confidence and inspire them to fully invest in the potential of their creative pieces. It’s a thoughtful way to foster inclusivity and celebrate a wider range of innovative ideas in advertising.
How would you define the perfect PHNX Awards winner?
The perfect PHNX Awards winner, in my view, embodies a blend of originality, impact, and technical excellence. It’s about more than just aesthetic appeal; it's a piece that pushes the boundaries of creativity while maintaining a clear, compelling message that resonates on a global scale. Such a winner would also showcase an innovative use of technology and visual effects, enhancing the storytelling without overshadowing the core message. Ultimately, it should leave a lasting impression, changing the way we think or feel about the subject matter, and setting new standards for what is possible in the realm of advertising.
What is having the biggest impact on creative trends at the moment?
Currently, the integration of advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, is having the most profound impact on creative trends across industries. AI tools are not only streamlining the production process but are also unlocking new realms of creativity, from AI-assisted design to automated video editing and effects. This technological shift encourages creatives to explore unprecedented artistic expressions and innovate at a pace and scale previously unimaginable.
Who would you nominate as your two or three “creatives of the year”?
In a world teeming with extraordinary talent, it’s truly challenging to single out just a few creatives as the standouts of the year. This year has seen an explosion of creativity fueled by diverse perspectives from all corners of the globe, each bringing their unique voice to the fore. Instead of naming individuals, I celebrate the collective spirit of innovation and bravery in our industry.
